HOUSES OF THE WORLD
Students of Pre primary classes of St. Kabir School, Naranpura had the activity of Animal Homes. Students had been shown pictures & models of a kennel, den, stable, pen, shed, nest and a sty etc…As a result they could identify and even name these different homes of animals.
Following this, teachers decided to broaden their horizons and show them the different types of houses in different regions of the world. It sounded a bit tough in the beginning but they simplified it by screening the film, “Three Little Pigs” which was engrossing as well as educating.
Later teachers gathered lots of information from the internet and finally zeroed down to 6 main regions, i.e. Desert region, Tundra region, Marshy lands, Forest areas and Kutcha/Pucca houses. Thus, dividing these houses region wise made it simpler for these little toddlers to grasp. Charts with pictures of houses of each region (igloo, stilt house, tents etc…) were put up in the classrooms & corridors.
In order to put in an element of rigor, teachers had designed worksheets requiring students to either color or match picture to materials these houses were made of. For the nursery students teachers had painstakingly made puzzles to make this activity interesting as well as fun.
Meanwhile parents lent their whole hearted support to teachers & together they meticulously crafted models of different types of houses from around the world. School held an exhibition displaying these models along with charts and posters. For each model a student presented his understanding in his own simple way in a few lines. Visitors to the exhibition & parents as well were impressed with the ease with which students replied to questions that were impromptu posed to them indicating that they had internalized the concept well.
All these interventions has resulted in strengthening the bond between school & parents through their children. The students can now tell us from the map that which type of houses are formed in different regions of the world & importantly they know why.
